Pittsfield acts as a gateway to the abundance of recreational opportunities that
are found in the western part of the state. Numerous local lakes provide ample
swimming, boating and fishing opportunities, while nearby Pittsfield
State Forest is a popular area for camping and hiking, since it features over
30 mi (48 km) of trails for visitors to explore. The Bousquet
Ski Resort & Family Fun Center offers year-round recreation, with skiing during
the winter months and a water park, go-karts and mountain biking in the summer.
Pittsfield boasts over 250 years of history and pioneer activities that visitors
can experience, including a historical village and a former residence of Herman
Mellville, who wrote his famous novel Moby Dick while residing in Pittsfield.
The
Berkshire Museum also draws visitors to Pittsfield, as it features art, history
and natural science displays, as well as an interactive aquarium.
